Why Energy Information is Needed

The energy business has evolved from a very static industry you would use with little if any thought to an extremely dynamic industry that has and continues to change dramatically over very short periods of time. With this transformation occurring, it is no longer sufficient for a facility manager to base decisions on utility supplied information for the main electric or gas meter. To be properly prepared the facility manager needs to know not only how much energy is used, but how it is used and what used the energy. In addition to being able to receive the information it has to be received in a timely fashion rather than 30 to 45 days after it was used.

In addition to a rapidly changing environment the rate tariff the customer gets billed under is also evolving from what was once thought as complex, static time-of-use rates that change from season-to-season to Real-Time and Curtailment tariffs. To be able to take advantage of the increasingly complex rates a customer has to first know their energy usage patterns and second be able to react to the changing environment.

A facility’s load profile over a day and throughout the week provides the insight necessary to be able to make informed decisions. It is important to not only optimize a facility overall, but also optimize it relative to the tariff it is getting billed on.
